oil on panel, 8"x8" The painter Susan Lyon came to give a workshop in San Francisco at the school I taught at a few years back. We had the chance to hang out and had a wonderful series of conversations. One story that she told me was about her wedding in the the dead of winter, Las Vegas, 1980- her story really peaked my interest and I said it sounded like a painting I'd like to make. A few weeks later I received a gift in the mail. It was her WEDDING DRESS (the green and blue 1960's taffeta cocktail dress you see in this painting)! I told her I'd send it back after I'd painted it, but she said it was mine to keep. I was so moved and so terrified by the responsibility of honoring her story that I have been attempting to paint this dress in the right circumstance for years. It's hanging behind me in the studio as I type this. It appears in many of my paintings: 'beginnings, endings', 'Black Dog' and several of my 'abstracted figures in interiors' which you can see on my website. It turned out that as I began this particular painting I also began thinking about my own marriage which I didn't yet know wasn't working... and about my father who'd just died. The little abstracted squares of color you see are photographs of my father's from the 70's that I'd taped to the wall near the dress. So you see, this painting is about beginnings and endings of many kinds, about thoughtfulness and respect.
