For this class students will create a new work each day. We will be painting from the model and using the Zorn Palette, which consists of just four colors.This limited palette will allow us to focus on the fundamentals: shapes, values, edges and color, stressing economy of action, and therefore smart use of our time. Making sketches from life is a great tool for creating longer paintings as it forces us to learn to record the most important information first.

Fundamentals first! The class will create one long drawing, methodically following my daily demonstrations. I offer verbal critique as well as a "tracing" method, where I lay a piece of tracing paper over the student's drawing and draw the subject from their same point of view, thus leaving them with an example of how a more experienced artist would approach the exact problems that they are encountering.

The class will meet at 5 different outdoor locations. Registered students will receive directions via email.

The class will create 10 different alla prima paintings on location in San Francisco and on the peninsula. We will work to overcome the changing nature of the outdoors and learn to formulate strategy to accomplish our goals for each painting. I will paint along side the students and offer critique and demonstration.
