Commissioning a Portrait Painting
First,
a meeting is held to discuss the general expectations of the portrait
(practical and aesthetic), finding the suitable composition, dress, etc. A
non-refundable down payment of 1/3 of the total fee is required at this time.
Once
this commitment to the portrait is made, there will be a photo session in the
studio or at another location. One of the photographs, chosen in consultation
with the client, serves as the point of departure for the portrait, and a
schedule of sittings is determined, if applicable. The portrait is painted
either from sittings, photograph(s), or a combination (as determined by client
and/or artist preference, time consideration, distance factor, and availability
of the subject).
The
average time for the delivery of a completed work is 3 months. Upon receipt and
acceptance of the completed Artwork, the remaining 2/3 of the fee is due,
including any additional expenses, if applicable ie. travel, shipping, framing.
All
portraits are painted in oil on canvas, at approximately life size
(16"X20" is the average size for a Head and Shoulders portrait of a
single person), using archival materials.
Fees vary, according to the number of people in the portrait. The following prices are for
single portraits. To add an additional person, the price will increase 50 %.
Drawing $1,500.00
Painting Head and Shoulders $2,000.00
Head to Hands $4,000.00
Full Figure $8,000.00
