I work in oil on canvas and wood, exploring the nexus of skill and intuition. This has allowed playfulness to express in my palette, mark making, and the abstracted quality of my work. My paintings depict resonant experiences of place, object, self, and personal relationship in my daily life. I must find my subject naturally, by noticing that I am in it. When I do, I pause to explore and capture it with the immediacy of my phone's camera. In the studio one image will shine through the collected reference, sometimes instantly, other times it will present years later. Creating my paintings requires a slow-down of life's pace and an offers opportunity to reflect on my experiences. My body of work is a memoir, written in tandem with my life and my understanding of it. I enjoy the tension of offering up this intimate record to the viewer, while knowing that this medium invites such subjectivity it may act more as a mirror. Either way, I hope that the work I create serves as a space of connectivity in our collective human experience.
The work is evidence of the journey.
